N14(2)3 VERY BRIGHT DEEP (LIME) GREEN. THE COLOUR OF THE''PEEL'' OF THE LIME FRUIT. THE SCARCITY OF THIS SHADE, USING AN ABSOLUTE COMPARISON INDEX, IS 111 AND RANKS HIGHER THAN N14(5) VERY DEEP GREEN, AT 108. THE SUFFIX NUMERAL''3'' IS MY CATALOGUE NUMBER FOR THIS UNLISTED SHADE.

THERE ARE TWO DISTICT SHADE STATES WHICH I HAVE FOUND. ONE BRIGHT AND ONE DULL.

BUT THE FRUIT APPEARS AS DULL IN IT'S NATURAL UNTREATED STATE. THE SHADE FOR SALE IS VERY DIFFERENT TO ALL N14 SHADES BEING BOTH''DEEP'' AND''BRIGHT'' WITH AN EXACT MATCH TO THE LIME FRUIT PEEL. THIS SHADE IS FROM THE SAME GROUP AS THE UNLISTED N14(2)2 DARK GREEN, WHICH IS JUST AS SCARCE. LIME-GREEN IS A VERY BRGHT VERSION OF DARK GREEN FOUND FROM 1914 THROUGH TO 1919.

IT DOES NOT DERIVE FROM BOOKLETS. I HAVE THREE COPIES OF THE BRIGHT SHADE AND A BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE DULL SHADE - ALL PRISTINE AND UNMOUNTED MINT.

THIS SHADE IS NOT LISTED BY ANY OTHER UK OR INTERNATIONAL DEALER. SHADE PROVENANCE: R C ALCOCK. MANY OF ALCOCK'S UNLISTED SHADE NAMES WERE DERIVED FROM NATURE AND THE ELEMENTS. THIS PRACTICE HAS ALWAYS BEEN FOLLOWED BY THOSE TRYING TO ASSOCIATE A COLOUR WITH SOMETHING WHICH EVERYONE HAS EVERYDAY ACCESS TO FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES.

ORANGE, LEMON, OLIVE FROM FRUITS, COBALT FROM THE ELEMENTS, HAVE ALWAYS BEEN USED FOR COLOUR NAMES. NOTE THAT ALCOCK USED''GRASS-GREEN'' AND PETROL-BLUE'' ET AL, FOR SOME OF HIS UNLISTED SHADE NAMES TOO. THUS IT IS EXTREMELY LIKELY THAT ALCOCK FOLLOWED THIS SAME PRINCIPAL AND ASSOCIATED THE COLOUR WHICH HE DESCRIBED AS''LIME-GREEN'' WITH THE PEEL OF THE LIME FRUIT.

ALCOCK IDENTIFIED LIME GREEN SOMEWHERE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY AND IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HE SUBMITTED THIS SHADE TO THE RPS IN LONDON FOR A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY WHICH THEY ISSUED DURING THE 60'S OR 70'S. TO MY KNOWLEDGE THIS CERTIFICATE HAS NEVER BEEN FOUND WITH THE ACTUAL ITEM SUBMITTED AND, DESPITE EXHAUSTIVE SEARCHES OF R C ALCOCK'S PHILATELIC ESTATE FROM PUBLIC AUCTIONS, NO TRACE HAS BEEN FOUND. THE RPS COPY OF THE CERTIFICATE IS HELD IN THE RPS ARCHIVE AND IT IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN SIGHTED BY A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF ASSOCIATES AND MEMBERS WHO HAVE HAD PRIVILEDGED ACCESS TO THE RECORDS.
